Artist's Comments

I finally completed converting a room in my house to a dedicated studio space for oil painting. Since then, I've been having friends/models come over to sit for portrait sketches. Here's two recent ones.
They are both 9x12", oil on masonite. Each one about 2.5 hour sittings.

Your technique is so gorgeous- I love the fading away of the brush stroke into the background. I know you say they are sketches, but I think it really adds to their beauty.

The one on the left in particular is quite stunning- just the air of confidence he conveys... it's very lovely!

Thanks for the kind comments.
I agree that looser brushstrokes are more appealing than anything tightly rendered. It's fun to design them too in a way that is interesting from an abstract point of view. I try to keep the spirit of that in my finished work too, though (although it's harder to pull off). Sometimes the affects of time pressure alone can really help keep a painting from being overworked, and therefore give it strength.

wow i can't believe you can produce these in two and a half hours! i love the vigour of the application, but the strong structure it creates. I'm trying to work something similar into some of my paintings. if it's not too much trouble i'd really appreciate it if you could give me any advice (this is my last painting [link] ).

Straight -ahead good old-fashioned PAINTING!

Sensitive and solid work!

These look dope. I love how you've balanced your use of color with the facial structure.

The fact that the portraits are not completed adds to their amazingness :D
