Jeremy - much appreciated from a light guru like yourself. The DS is one of the most enjoyable tools I've ever bought. Perfect for small colour sketches!
You'll need to purchase what's called a Flash Cart, which allows your DS to run home-brew software. It hosts a MicroSD chip, and fits into the DS just like a regular game cartridge.
There's a few Flash Carts around, and they all work. The most popular one (and the one I use) is the R4, which I bought here: [link]
You'll also need the MicroSD chip, which holds the software. Of course, you can get these anywhere and maybe already have one. I've heard the DS has problems with anything over 2GB, so I recommend the 1 or 2gb MicroSD.
If you get the R4, you'll just need to download its OS from the site, and you're ready to rock.
The painting software itself is free, and you can get it here:

Hope that was clear. If you get one, be sure to post the paintings!
